Created by Jaden MacEachern, Dalhousie University
- π Truro β Seafoam Lavender Farm β Jost Vineyards β Tatamagouche (overnight) β Tatamagouche Brewing β Rushton Beach β Truro
- π 2 days Β· one night at the Train Station Inn in Tatamagouche
- π About 225 km round trip Β· roughly 4 hours of driving spread over 2 days
- ποΈ 12 stops
- πΈ Best time: late June through September β lavender blooms peak in July, wineries and patios in full swing, Northumberland Strait beaches at their warmest
Nova Scotiaβs Northumberland Shore is the provinceβs quiet counterpoint to the busier South Shore and Cabot Trail β a long, gentle coastline along the Northumberland Strait, lined with farming villages, small wineries, working fishing wharves, and the warmest saltwater beaches on Canadaβs Atlantic coast (warmer than the Bay of Fundy, warmer than Prince Edward Islandβs south shore). This road trip loops through the best of it in two days from Truro.
Day 1 heads north from Truro through the low green hills of Colchester County to the coast: breakfast at NovelTea, a midday hour at Seafoam Lavender Farm (peak bloom late June through early August, gates open at noon), lunch on the deck at Nova Scotiaβs largest winery, a village afternoon in Tatamagouche, an early dinner at The Chowder House on Main, and a night in a restored 1887 CN Rail caboose at the Train Station Inn.
Day 2 opens with coffee in the old station building, a flight at Tatamagouche Brewing, lunch at Big Alβs on Station Road, an afternoon swim at Rushton Beach when the strait is at its warmest, and the run home down Route 326 and Route 311.
Book the Train Station Inn at least a month ahead for summer weekends β cabooses in particular fill quickly. Time the trip for mid-July to catch peak lavender bloom, warm beach water, and full winery patios. September is quieter and often the sweet spot for the drive if the beach isnβt the main draw.
